English pickleball stars jetting to Mumbai

A strong English contingent is heading for Mumbai next month to compete for $100,000 in ‘Asia’s largest pickleball tournament’ – the 2024 Indian Open.

Reigning English national men’s doubles winners Louis Laville and Freddie Powell, English women’s singles champion Pei-Chuan Kao, men’s title winner James Chaudry and 2022 women’s singles champion Thaddea Lock have all been invited by organisers Global Sports to join a multi-national line-up from 7-11 February.

The Brits will join players from India, Kenya, USA, Dubai, Spain, France, Germany, Taiwan, Poland, Singapore and the Philippines on the bill at the National Sports Club of India.

The plush venue in the Worli area of Mumbai has a seating capacity of 5,000. The tournament schedule can be seen below.

There are Open, 19+ advanced, 35+ Open, 35+ Intermediate, 60+ Open, U18 and U14 Open, 19+ Intermediate Plus and 50+ Open categories.

Louis, the 2022 English men’s singles champion, posted on Instagram: “A huge thank you to Global Sports for inviting me, and several other top European players. We all cannot wait to compete against some of the top players internationally! An opportunity to visit a new country, meet new players and compete at the highest level.”

Thaddea said: “My first tournament stop of 2024 🤩 The APP Indian Open in Mumbai. I’m so lucky to be able to play a sport I love and travel to exciting new places!”
