Llangefni pickleballers marked the festive season with a Christmas-themed bake-off, under the watchful eye of leader Jan Milburn.
It all stemmed from rather less successful bakes courtesy of Jan a few months ago – “I promised them one of these days I’d make a nice cake! Then we did a Halloween fancy dress event and I took a nice cake to that one, we had a tournament and some fun, and it sparked swapping of recipes on our WhatsApp group.
“So I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be good if everyone made their own creations and we combined it with a tournament?'”
So the Llangefni Christmas Bake-off was born – complete with fairy lights, tinsel, and the usual seasonal songs.
The group have been running in Anglesey for only a year, with Jan taking the project on at the suggestion of Kath Knowles (“she’s a force of nature,” says Jan). They meet on Monday mornings and Friday afternoons in Plas Arthur, the local sports centre, and benefit from government funding earmarked to encourage older people to be active.
They now have 35 regular attendees, with more on the mailing list.
“It’s taken off massively,” she says.
