“The most wonderful, friendly, supportive and welcoming people” – newbies New Mills about to begin county league action

Less than two years since their first-ever session – which attracted just three players – New Mills Pickleball Club now boasts more than 100 players and is preparing for its first Derbyshire County League matches this weekend.

They face David Lloyd Derby in the inaugural encounter of a competitive league devised to raise the level of the sport in the local area – with home and away ties and an overall champion crowned at the end of the season.

The club was founded by Cath Townley, who played her first game of pickleball at Chapel-en-le-Frith in 2022 – and found out there was no facility closer to home. She spoke to her local leisure centre, booked a court, and went from there – creating a thriving non-profit social club which now hosts four sessions every week.

“I had just celebrated my 60th birthday when I first played pickleball, having never played a racquet sport in my life,” Cath told Pickleball 52.

“I loved how simple the game was to learn, if difficult to master, but most of all I loved the people. The pickleball community is made up of the most wonderful, friendly, supportive and welcoming people I have ever met, no matter where I’ve played.

“Plus it’s addictive!”

New Mills are also seeking sponsors to help cover the costs of their season; any interested potential partners can drop them an email.
